Google’s Year in Search 2017

Every time I see these lists, I’m mainly surprised that people are searching straightforward words or phrases. When I Google it’s like, “if I’m writing a program in C++ and my cat is looking at me what kind of cake should I make?”

  1. its the nature of averages to come up with shorter search queries as the most common ones.

no matter how many people google for specific things at least 90% of the time, the specific queries will be less common because they will be longer and (with each token added) statistically more likely to differ slightly– making the query less common.

but i will gladly bow to a statistician or other qualified researcher that explains the error in these statements, until then i will expect shorter, simpler queries to always come out of these things. if theres ever something very specific i will be surprised.
