Photo of Day: Basaltic Rocks of the Pacific Northwest

I went on an awesome geology trip to the Oregon Coast today. My group and I explored several cool spots with amazing geological history. Oregon really is a geologist’s paradise! I collected a few rocks, mainly basalt, because we have so much here. My favorites were a porphyritic basaltic rock with augite and another with plagioclase phenocrysts.

I know rocks and minerals aren’t exciting for everyone, but they really are worth reading about. They tell us a lot about the history of Earth, of course, but knowing a little about them makes every outdoor trip an exploring adventure!
